kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:Excel formula in the forums.
This formula =IF(A1<23,"U",IF(A1<=29,"M",IF(A1<=35,"S"))) will test each number and return the value you want and if it's not one of those value's it will return a False statement. You can change the false statement by just adding the word you want at the end like this =IF(A1<23,"U",IF(A1<=29,"M",IF(A1<=35,"S","ERROR"))).

I moved your thread to the correct forum. Please look at what forum you are posting in next time before you post. If you are unsure, just post in this General Forum. Thank You.

kmctechguy created a new topic Computer Giveway Details and Rules in the forums.

I'm happy to say that I was finally able to rebuild another computer for another giveaway. This one is a Compaq Presario 6000, rebuilt with an AMD XP 1600 CPU, 1GB of memory, 80GB hard drive, DVD Drive, CD Rewritable, and Radeon 9600 3D graphics card with VGA, S-Video, and DVI video out ports. It's running a valid copy of Windows XP Home Edition. I will be loading it up with some great free software that will help anyone do most of the daily activities that need to be done on a computer. This is a great computer and runs great. I'm also happy to say that I was able to get a keyboard, mouse and working 15" LCD Flat screen monitor to go with it. The winner can thank all those folks that have donated to the KMC Tech Guy. To win it all you have to do is be a US ID card holder, be willing to pick up the computer in the Kaiserslautern area, and be chosen to win. To be chosen, post a new message in this forum on why you should get the computer. After 1 weeks time on 17 April 2010, 3 of the best messages will be chosen from my kids. After the 3 have been chosen, I will post a poll on the front page where the community will vote for the winner. The person with the most votes on 24 April will win the Dell computer. If I can get an LCD monitor within that time frame, I will give that away too so that I can give away a complete system. Good luck.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re: Camcorder ?? in the forums.
I did some research and there doesn't look like there is an easy way to do what you want without the camera. There are players from Panasonic and Sony that play min DV cassettes but they are extremely pricey and you would save a lot more just buying a new camera that uses DV mini cassettes. Now you may wan't to ask in some of the specialty stores that develop photos as they may have one of these expensive players and may be able to easily copy the contents onto a DVD disk. Another option is to mail it into an online store that specializes in video conversion. You can do a google search for video transfer service or check out these links and see if they can help.
www.apmstudio.com/video-transfer/vhs-to-...o-dvd-conversion.asp
www.digiteckmedia.com/

Now I have never used any of these services so I'm not sure if they do shipping overseas to the military, but I'm sure there is one that probably will. The next time I go to Media Markt or Saturn, I will ask if they do video conversion or if they know where it can get done here locally. This will probably be the best and easiest if you don't want to get another camera.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:Inherited T Com router in the forums.
Depending on how old the router is, there may be a white label on the back with the password (GerätPasswort) to configure the device as well as the SSID (the name of the wireless signal that you said is hidden) as well as the WPA/WPA2 Password/Key (it probably says something like WLAN Schlüssel or WPA Schlüssel). There is also a button on the back side of the router for turning on and off the WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). To make sure the WLAN is on you should see a WLAN led light lit. If it is not, hit the button on the back side of the router and wait a minute and you should see it come on.

Now if none of this helps to configure the router or to access the wireless network, then you probably have an older router. If so you can do a reset. It usually involves pushing the reset button which is recessed in a small hole on the back. You will need a straighten paper clip or something else small and sharp to push in the reset button. To set it back to default, you will need to push in the reset and hold it for about 30-45 seconds, unplug the power while still holding the reset button, and plug it back in. After about another 30 second count you release the reset button. If this doesn't work the first time, try it again and make sure you feel the reset button being pushed. After it resets you will need to go back in and put in the username and password for your Telekom DSL connection so make sure you have that information available. The default username is normally admin and the default password is normally 0000. It's can be different depending on the model.

Now most of this was general for most routers, but I believe your speedport model is a little different. The default password should still be 0000 but I don't believe it will ask for a username. The other thing that is different about your is that I don't believe you have a reset button so you will have to reset it a different way. If you can access the router through the web interface, then on the configuration menu on the load and save tab (Laden & Sichern) there should be a factory settings button or link (Werkseinstellung). After you press this you may be given an option to press yes (Ja) or no (Nein). Press yes and the device will reboot and in a few minutes you will be back to the manufacturer default settings. If this does not work plug a phone into the back of it onto one of the phone jack connections if not already done and dial #991*15901590* which should also reset the device. Once it is reset the default password is 000 to log into it over the web. Also the web address for it will either be 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.2.254.

After the reset you will have to first configure your internet settings and put in your DSL username and password you got from Telekom. Make sure the internet is working by physically plugging the computer into the router with a network cable. After you have verified it works, configure your wireless setting. You will want to enable WPA or WPA encryption with AES or TKIP cipher. If it asks for a passphrase or key then this will be the key you will use for all your computers to connect to the router over wireless so make sure you put in something you can remember or you may end up going through this entire process again.

Good luck and I hope this info helps you get back online.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re: talking desktop in the forums.
I did some more looking around for you and all the sites I've been to all say that Dragon Naturally Speaking is the best software out there for your needs, though it's not easy to get working. Dictation software takes some time for the program to learn your voice and for you to learn how it works, so there is a bit of a learning curve. Now there is also a free option that is built into Windows 7, Vista, and current Mac computers. They have some basic speech to text capabilities built into their accesibility program groups. If you haven't tried that yet, give it a try and see if it works. If you need something more then you will have to buy additional software. Here is another link that may help: www.consumersearch.com/voice-recognition-software

Other than that, maybe someone else that reads this will be able to comment on Talking Desktop. Good luck and I hope whatever software you get will help.

Also, please make sure you have a fairly new computer. Dictation software can be a major load on computers and most new computers shouldn't have a problem dealing with it, but older ones will. I would say any computer that is probably 4 years or older may have issues with the dictation software. So before you buy make sure your computer meets the minimum specifications needed to run the software you get.

We'll I found a few reviews you may want to read up on. There may be alternative programs to use that may be better just depending on what you are trying to do. If you let me know exactly what you are looking for, I will see if I can't find a program that may be better, but here are a few reviews you should check.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:Sleepy PC in the forums.
My first guess is that the processor is overheating or the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is overheating or having problems. Does this happen when you run a certain program? Some programs, even web based ones like flash games use up a lot of processor speed and can also cause the Computer Processing Unit (CPU) to work very hard. Now the internal fans should be helping to keep the CPU and GPU cool but if it is not working, this could also be causing the problem. If the internal fan is working, but it's still warm where you have the computer, you may want to try and get one of those cooling pads for laptops. They have fans on the bottom to keep the laptop cool. If the internal fan isn't working, then you will need to get the laptop fan replaced. If you live in the Ramstein Kaiserslautern area, I can do this for you. If not you will have to take it to your local computer store to have them do the repair unless it is still under warranty, in which case you will need to send it to Toshiba for them to repair.

This is the best answer I can give you from what I know of what you posted. Hopefully this helps but if you have other issues, or know of other problems, let me know.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:windows media player in the forums.
The most likely issue is that the station you are listening to is down or having problems. If it is, there is nothing you can do except find another station. A great way to test this is to have someone try and play the same station you are playing on a different network. If you provide me with the link or the name of the station, I can check and make sure they are still online.

Another possible issue is that your internet connection is having problems. If this is the case though, you would probably notice it if you try to open other stations.

Now if you can surf the Internet and everything seems to work, but you can't listen to stations on Windows Media Player then it may be an issue with the Windows Media Player or just a setting. If you changed any settings recently in the Windows Media Player or if you installed any Windows updates, this might have affected it. The best way to test this issue is to try your station on another computer on your network and see if it works.

Based on what you have told me so far I can't tell you exactly what is wrong, only tell you what it might be. Once you cn identify the problem by doing some of these basic troubleshooting steps, we can figure out how to fix it.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:alarm? in the forums.
It's sounds like the CPU is overheating and it's a temperature error beep from the system. Please make sure it is clean in the inside, and if not get a can of compressed air and spray off the fan and heat-sink on the processor. Make sure the fan on the heat-sink above the CPU is running as well. If everything is running fine, there may be a way to change the threshold of the CPU temperature warning level from within the startup menu(also know as the bios menu). Most likely the CPU temperature warning is what those beeps are. It will continue to run, and the beeps will continue to come if the CPU stays above the temperature warning level set in the bios. If the CPU continues to be too hot, it will eventually shut down. If it is constantly getting too hot, it could damage the CPU. Are you playing any flash based web games or are you doing anything else that may be processor intensive? Facebook games are flash based and a lot of people don't realize that these games are processor intensive and running them for a while can cause the CPU to get very hot. If you need any help with any of this let me know.

kmctechguy replied to the topic Re:Sleepy videos? in the forums.
There are a few reasons that could be causing this issue and I don't believe there is anything you can do about it. If you are connected to the internet over cable, you need to realize that cable is a shared medium which means when there are a lot of people using the cable at the same time, your bandwidth is decreased. Your decreased bandwidth could be causing the slowness when watching in the morning. I have a feeling this is not your issue as most users are usually on the Internet at night, which it is in the States when you are watching in the morning. The server in the States providing the video feed could be having problems if too many users are connected to it. An easy way to determine this is to try another a video stream from a different location. Try YouTube feeds, and see if they appear to run slower or faster in the morning or night. Also, try other video feeds to see if it's just the one site you are having this issue with or all sites. Another issue that it might be that you can fix is if you are watching video over your wireless connection and there is something causing interference in the morning that is not there at night. To test this, just connect your computer straight to your router with a network cable and turn off your wireless on your computer. Now see if you are still having these problems. If not, this is a good indicator that you might be getting interference on your wireless connection in the morning causing your wireless connection speed to drop or the quality to drop. to fix this try changing the wireless channels on your router. The channels I have had the best luck with over here in Germany on wireless routers are 3, 5, 6, and 11. Try each one until your issue disappears. Hopefully something in this long post will help you determine what the problem is.

I'm glad we got it to work again. It's still a good computer and you should get a few more years out of it. I hope it lasts you that long at least before something else goes wrong. Take care and thanks for the positive feedback.
