I have a similiar setup at home since I have 3 stories I want to cover with wireless. I do like the idea of having one segment being 5GHz and 2.4GHz but you do have to have devices that support the 5GHz range. I only have a couple. You can also just use channels that are far enough apart in the 2.4GHz range. I use channel 3, 11, and 6 on mine with channel 3 on the top, then channel 11 on the middle floor, and channel 6 on the bottom floor. Now with any wireless router, if you use only the switch ports then you will bypass all layer 3 services except for DHCP so make sure you only have one DHCP server in the entire setup. The rest doesn't matter. NAT is a layer 3 router function and is only used when data leaves the layer 3 port on the wireles routers. If you just use the switch ports, then you are just using it as a layer 2 switch with a wireless access point. You also only need to set up IPs on all the other routers if you want to manage them. If not, you can just turn off the DHCP on all except the one connected to the internet, set up the same SSID and password on all of them, and connect them together using only the switch ports and not the WAN or Internet port. Once you do this, you will be able to roam from one wireless router to the next and as the signals start to drop from one device you will automatically be picked up by the next. Now mind you, this works on any wireless router regardless if you can use it as an access point. Configuring it as an access point will just allow you to use the router port and turn off all the other crap that is not needed. Now if you can't connect them together via wire, then you will have to use a wireless bridge, range extender, or a wireless router that can be configured as a wireless bridge. I ran ino this isue when I was first trying to do this a few years back. There are not too many devices that can be used as wireless bridges so trying toextende the range without connecting devices with cables is a little more tricky. Anyway, I hope this helps as well and now thanks to Casper, there are now 2 ways posted on how to extend your wireless network. Thanks for the info Casper200519.
