Using DSL modem as WAP with cable 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I recently emailed you about this issue im having trying to use my dsl modem with my cable as a wireless access point. I do need pictures because i'm lost. Have never been in the situation before. The Wireless modem is Level One WBR-3460.

If you want to use your router with the Telekom router, just turn off the DHCP feature on your level one router, and then plug a CatV (Ethernet cable) between the switch port on the Telekom router and the switch port on your Level One router. You will not need to worry about configuring IP addresses or WAN configurations on your router as all you will be using is the switch part and wireless part on your router. Then configure the wireless settings on the Level One. Once you have done this, you will now basically have a wireless access point. The Telekom router is your gateway router and should have the DHCP turned on. It will issue your computers the IP addresses connected to your Level One. So don't worry about the phone connection on your router. You can use any of the 4 Ethernet ports on your router to connect to any of the 4 ports on the Telekom router.

Using the attached picture as a reference, connect your Level One router to your Telekom router through the switch ports. Do not use the phone line or the DSL or WAN ports, only the LAN or switch ports between the 2 devices. The blue line between the devices shows how you should connect it. I know the Level One in the image is not your device, but it should be similiar on the back for you to get the idea of how to hook it up.

Try just doing that and see if it works. To use the wireless, you will need to make sure it is enabled on the Level One, and that you have setup security like WPA2.

See if this works, if not you may need to turn off wireless on the Telekom router if it has it, and turn off the DHCP feature on your Level One Router. Try turning off the DHCP feature first. The reson for this is because the IP address of your Telekom router is the gateway, and not your LevelOne. If the level one sends out the IP information to the PC, then it will say that its the gateway, but this is wrong cause the Telekom router is the gateway.

If you do the above, you are basically bypassing your layer 3 Router feature and making it a layer 2 switch and wireless access point.

If you still need help, please give me some more details on what equipment you have and how you are connected, like the type of Telekom router, if you have DSL or Cable, and if you have ISDN for the phone lines.

I started thinking based on the category where you placed this issue that your Internet connection is through a cable modem and not a DSL modem. If that is the case you pretty much do the same thing, except you only have one port off your cable modem for the connection to your wireless DSL router.
