Stay away from registry cleaners as they usually do more damage than help at least that has been my experience with them.
From the sounds of it, I think you did the upgrade process instead of the clean install. You can do a clean install from the upgrade CD, and this is the preferred method so you do not bring any files or issues from past versions of Windows with you to Windows 7. I have no problems with my Windows 7 and I am running it on a slower machine with less memory than you have. Let me know how you installed it as I believe this may be your problem. Also, you may have to get updated drivers from Sony to give it the best performance. But I think your issue is with how you installed the upgrade version on Windows 7. I think I can help you get it running the way it is suppose to be running.
An easy way to know whether you did a clean install is to tell me which question did you answer in the install process when it asked you if you wanted to do an Upgrade or Custom install. If you did the Upgrade option, then any bugs you had with the older operating system could have been brought over to the new operating system, including but not limited to Virus, Malware, or any other crappy software still in the old system. You want to choose Custom, and then advanced. This will give you the ability to format your drive and begin the clean install. Before you do this process, make sure you have all your data backed up because the format will wipe your drive.
Another issue I thought of is that Windows 7 upgrade comes with both a 64bit OS and a 32bit OS. The 64bit version should be faster than the 32bit version. Also, the 32bit version can't take full advantage of 4GB of memory so to get the full use out of all your memory, you need to make sure you installed the 64bit version.
So if you do the clean install and install the 64 bit version, I bet you will have a different attitude about Windows 7. If you need help, let me know and I'll step you through all the steps. If need be, I can call you as well and help walk you through it.
