Thanks again for helping me set up my DIR 655 Router yesterday. The main reason I bought this router (except for the phenomenal range and performance)is the ability to connect printers and external storage devices directly to the USB port on the router, however I have a Verbatim 320GB external HDD that I can't get to work. When I connect it the lights on the HDD just blink instead of staying on as if operating normally. I've tried connecting and rebooting the router with no luck. I even reformatted the HDD to remove any possible problems on it. Through the program installed from the disc to use this feature I can see the router is enabled and should be ready for sharing. I can connect my digital camera to the router and pull pictures and video with no problem. Could just be the HDD. I have a TB ordered so it won't upset me if the HDD doesn't work as long as my new one does. In the meantime I have a HDD with a few hundred movies that I use frequently with both computers so I tried to setup file sharing so I could just leave the HDD connected to my laptop. On my laptop I am able to choose public folder sharing with my desktop however when I try to turn on public folder sharing on my desktop I get an error message that says RPC service is unavailable.

On the setup page of your router, select the USB settings tab on the left and then make sure your USB settings are set for Shareport. After you have done that, go to your router status page and see what firmware you are running. If you are running Firmware 1.31 or higher you need to install and run this PC SharePint Utility Program ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/...port_utility_110.zip.
If you are running Firmware version 1.21 or prior, install and run this SharePort Utility ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/..._USB_Utility_114.zip.

If it's still not working correctly after you have done this let me know. Also let me know what Firmware Version you have on your router.

I am running 1.21 on my router which it says is the latest version. What I don't understand is that I can plug my camera up and access through both computers no problem.

The one I downloaded is very similar to the one from the disk. Once says network USB utility and the other says share port network USB utility

What partition is the hard drive formated in? To find out, plug the drive into the computer and right click on the drive and select properties. On the first screen it should tell you the file system.
