Just a quick tip on how to extend your wireless over multiple floors. If you have more than one wireless router, just make one of them the primary and then on the rest of them, turn off the dhcp feature. Create the same SSID and password for the wireless settings on each of your routers. Then just run a Cat5 Network cable from the switch ports of each of your secondary routers to the switch port of your primary router. Now you have turned your routers into access points that will allow you to rome between floors, and you will automatically pick up on the best signal. If you can't run a wire between routers, you can try to use a powerline adapter or you an wireless access point that is compatible with your router. The above tip works no matter who the maker of the router is. I have this setup at home and love it.

You will need to run a CAT5 cable from your new router to your old router. This cable will be plugged into one of the numbered ports on the new router. DO NOT PLUG IT INTO THE WAN PORT. Since your first (Kabe) router is handling DHCP (IP address assignments) you don't want to mix the two up.

The only way to connect the two wireless routers together without the cable is if the router was designed to act as an AP and most are not.

*IMPORTANT*
Before you connect the second router to the first, connect the second router to a PC by itself (the PC cannot be connected to any other routing device). Once you have the router and PC connected, go into the router's configuration page. This is usually accomplished by opening a web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and typing in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the address field of the browser. If you are using a BELKIN router the IP address would be 192.168.2.1. This will get you into the routers configuration page where you can TURN OFF DHCP on that router. You may also have the ability to make the router act as an AP device by selecting this feature. Look through the routers settings or in the book that came with the router. Once you have DHCP turned off and you have saved the new configuration, you can now connect the new router to the old one and you should be able to get a wireless connection.

It would easy for me to do except for one issue............ my old router manual is in german. I change the current IP address in the configuration from 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.1.1. DHCP is set to Ein. My options are AUS or EIN. I will test it like this to see what happen. I will keep you posted.

10 minutes later
well it didn't work. i get connected to my old router. It's funny, the router is not connected to anything just the wall.

Using the image above as an example, the first router that is connected to the internet should be set up normally. Make sure you can get out on the Internet and that everything works normally with it. The above Picture shows a TKS router. Yours is probably a Motorola since you have cable. Once this one is working connect your computer to the second router and turn off the DHCP feature, which is AUS for off in German. After you have done that, connect the TKS reouter to your first router with a CatV network cable only connecting to the switch ports between them. Do not use the wan port at all on your TKS router. Once you have done this, you should be able to connect your computer to the TKS router and connect to the web. After you get that part working, you can then go configure the wireless on your routers and everything should work. If you can't figure this out, pm me and I will set up some time where I can remote in to help you configure the TKS router.

couple fo things that I forgot to mention.
The first router is a TKS router, the second router is a D-link.
I turn off the DHCP in the TKS and change the IP address to 192.168.1.1 and connected to the D-link as shown in the picture above.
Now..
I get signal in my room but.... the network that shows that i'm connected to is the TKS rather than the D-Link.
I'm assuming that since I haven't closed my account with TKS, the router still working by itself. The D-Link router it provides signal from Deutsch Telecom.
I just switch providers becuase they are cheaper and i get free cell phone services. Meantime, i have to wait until next month to closed my account with TKS (part of the 2 year contract deal).

So based on what i have done so far, if there is anything else that i need to do?
